The standard we hold

WCAG 2.1 Level AA is the technical standard we build to, and we are moving toward 2.2. Separately, we hold ourselves to the accessibility law that applies to us, including the Americans with Disabilities Act. When a page shuts someone out, we count it as a break in the build, the same as any other bug, and we repair it.

How this site is built

Access is engineered into the page, not painted over it:

• An ordered heading structure and named page regions, so a screen reader can move through with sense.
• Everything reachable and operable by keyboard, with a focus outline you can see and a link that jumps straight to the content.
• A text description on every image.
• Contrast and type sized to stay legible, and a layout that holds when text is enlarged.
• Motion that eases off when a visitor asks for less, and pinch-zoom we never switch off.

Visual first, with sound as a layer

Our work is made to be understood on sight, and to stand on its own with the sound off. When we publish video, a person writes and checks the captions, and where it serves the piece we add a transcript and spoken-language and audio access, so people who do not sign are included too. Sign language carries the meaning. Audio is one of the layers of access around it.

Never finished

We do not treat access as a box checked once. We keep testing, and we keep repairing. If a part of this site does not work for you, the gap is ours to close, and we would far rather you flag it than quietly go.

What we are still building

• Hands-on testing with assistive technology, and with Deaf and disabled reviewers.
• More ASL video across the pages.
• The step up from 2.1 to 2.2 conformance.
• A standing audit as the site grows.
